Blerina Sinaimeri to Open the Computer Science Musings

Computer Engineering Department  at Epoka University announces the beginning of a series of talks named "Computer Science Musings".  The aim of these talks is to show the state of the art of a field in computer science and to motivate/inspire the audience to push the research in the field further.

On 24th December at 13:00 at Epoka University's conference room, we are welcoming Dr. Blerina Sinaimeri from Université Lyon I – INRIA with the following talk.

TITLE: "Combinatorial biology: a mathematical exploration of species interaction"

ABSTRACT

Computer science and biology have a long story together. By answering questions that cannot be addressed by other means, computer science can provide indispensable tools for biological research. At the same time, research in biology continuously contributes with new types of problems which the computer science community has not previously encountered, driving forward this area as well. In this talk we will see the influence of mathematics and computer science in the phylogenetic studies of co-evolution. Coevolution happens when  two (or more) species reciprocally affect each other’s evolution and it is likely to happen when the species have close ecological interactions with one another. These interactions can be of different kind but in this talk we will focus in parasite/host relationships. In this context we will exploit problems in co-phylogeny, that aims to understand how the evolution of the host has driven the evolution of the parasite by reconstructing their ancient relationships using phylogenetic information.  We will
formulate the co-phyologeny problems as combinatorial problems and describe the state of the art of the solutions. We will and show that despite the increasingly research in this area there are still many hurdles remaining. In this direction we propose some challenging open problems.

Refreshments will be served at 12:45.
