Introduction
1. Mission:
The mission of the Department of Computer Engineering is to educate the students to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of science and engineering so that they can develop solutions to Computer Engineering problems and enhance their skills on computer science, computer architecture, design and analysis of algorithms, software engineering communication and research skills. It is aimed to especially emphasize teamwork, independent and innovative thinking and leadership qualities. The approach is to offer a high class education by having experienced lecturers offering classes compatible with the best curricula in the world. Focus is placed on ‘hands on’ learning by providing modern laboratories where specific courses have up to 50% of work in the lab.
2. Context:
The Computer Engineering Department offers programs in three cycles of education: in bachelor, master and doctorate level. The programs offered are (i) Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, (ii) Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Digital Communication Engineering, (iii) Master of Science in Computer Engineering, (iv) Professional Master in Computer Engineering, (v) Master of Science in Electronics and Communication and (vi) Doctorate in Computer Engineering. A major challenge is responding in time to national, regional and international needs. Another challenge is to make the department stronger and shape it to a modern structure with more power. According to the new law of the higher education, the department assumes more control and is more independent.
3. Vision:
The vision of the Department of Computer Engineering is to be a department whose graduates are highly preferred in worldwide IT industry and to gain a leadership position in Albania and Balkans.
4. Sources
In order to achieve the aspects mentioned above the Computer Engineering Department aims to continue hiring well qualified staff and also to support the further qualification and academic improvement of the current staff. We aim to improve the atmosphere of collaboration among the academic staff and also to accelerate the inclusion of the students in the bachelor study program in the research of staff members as soon as the fifth semester and inclusion of the students in the master of science study program from their first semester. In order to make this possible an importance will be paid to the enrolment of successful students. Special focus will be on the enrolment of brilliant students in graduate programs, both master of science and doctorate. In order to facilitate this, the participation in international research projects is essential. The department aims the creation of its own funds and resources that would be used for networking with local HEIs for participation in Erasmus+ capacity building projects.
5. Achievements from the last period
The Computer Engineering Department until now has had a graduation rate of 62% in the bachelor studies and 52% in the Master studies. The graduation rate in the bachelor studies is comparable with graduation rates in the top universities in the world. We aim to increase the graduation rate in both of these two programs up to 75% in the next 5 years.
The Department has co-organized two series of an international conference and this has attracted respected researchers from European universities. The Department is participating in three COST projects where three members of our academic staff are representatives. The participation in these COST projects has contributed in the training of the academic staff and six lecturers have participated in workshops and training schools organized in their framework. In the next five years we aim to double these figures.
